Summer is winding down and as you transition into the fall here are a few safety tips to keep in mind.
Watch out for Wildlife
Wildlife such as deer become very active during the fall season. You should be watching for posted warning signs along the road and slowing down to avoid a possible collision, especially at dust and dawn when they are most active. If you do encounter an animal, remember that they often travel in groups, so if you see one, there is probably more. And if you find yourself in the unlucky situation of an animal in your path, don’t swerve, as you might overturn putting your life and others in danger. Instead keep your truck straight, use your breaks while maintaining control, and if safe to do so, avoid the animal.
Plan and Adjust for Weather Changes
Poor visibility is common in the fall when the weather conditions become foggy or rainy, and weather is very unpredictable in the fall. Check the weather forecast each morning and always be prepared for changing conditions. It’s also a good idea to start preparing for winter now, because it’s just around the corner. And you never know what you’ll get an early frost or snowfall.
Watch out for Leaves on the Road
The fall colours are beautiful, but once they leave the trees they can become a traffic hazard. Piles of leaves on road can hide potholes, and when they become wet, they can cause you to skid. It is important to reduce your speed if you encounter leaf covered sections of roads or highways.
Sun Glare
With the sun setting earlier and the days getting shorter, chances are you’re going to driving with the sun low on the horizon, causing sun glare. To combat this, make sure you have a pair of sunglasses in your truck, your windshield is clean, and all your lights are operational. You should also increase your following distance to the vehicle in front of you.
